Swedish or Classic Massage
Most common and most popular massage. Swedish or classic massage is an absolutely wonderful remedial type of massage to soothe tight muscles. Generally during Swedish massage you are nude underneath a towel or sheet. So, Swedish massage commences with the client lying comfortably on the couch fully covered by towels with the exception of the head. The only other area to be exposed will be the body part the masseur/masseuse is working on. Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking It is interesting that the term "Swedish" massage is not really known in the country of Sweden, where it is simply called "classic massage"
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses plants essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person's mood and alleviate pain. The effectiveness of aromatherapy is yet to be scientifically proven, however some evidence exists that essential oils may have therapeutic potential.Aromatherapy should not be confused with fragrances or perfume oils. Since some essential oils such as tea tree have demonstrated anti-microbial effects, it has been suggested that they may be useful for the treatment of infectious diseases.
Hot Stone Massage
Hot stone massage is a variation on classic massage therapy. Heated smooth, flat stones (usually basalt stones) are placed on key points on the body. The massage therapist may also use them to massage certain areas of the body. The heat of the rocks causes muscles to relax, thus allowing the therapist to apply deeper, more precise pressure if desired or necessary. The heat contained in the rocks also relaxes nerves, and may improve chakra flow if placed on chakra centers on the body.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The massage therapist uses slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas.Deep tissue massage is used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems, or recovery from injury. People often feel sore for one to two days after deep tissue massage.
Shiаtsu
Shiatsu (japanese from shi, meaning finger, and atsu, meaning pressure) is a traditional hands-on therapy originating in Japan. Shiatsu uses localized finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians. Each point is held for for two to eight seconds to improve the flow of energy and help the body regain balance. People are normally pleasantly surprised when they try shiatsu for the first time. It is relaxing yet the pressure is firm, and there is usually no soreness afterwards.
Thai Massage
Like shiatsu, Thai massage aligns the energies of the body using gentle pressure on specific points. Thai massage also involves stretching and deep massage. This form of bodywork is usually performed on the floor, and the client wears comfortable clothes that allow movements. No oils are used in Thai massage. It's like yoga without doing any work. Thai massage is more energizing than other forms of massage. It also reduces stress and improves flexibility and range of motion. In Thailand it is known as "nuat phaen boran", literally, the ancient-manner massage.
Reflexology - Foot Massage
Although reflexology is sometimes called foot massage, it is more than simple foot massage. Reflexology maps the body with the feet, the right foot corresponding to the right side of the body and the left foot corresponding to the left side of the body. Because the whole body is represented in the feet, reflexologists consider themselves to be holistic health practitioners, not foot doctors.
Sport Massage
Sports massage is specifically designed for people who are involved in physical activity. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling and to reduce muscle tension. However, you don't have to be a professional athlete to have one-it's also used by people who are active and work out often. The focus isn't on relaxation but on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance. A combination of techniques are used. The strokes are generally faster than Swedish massage. Facilitated stretching is a common technique. It helps to loosen muscles and increase flexibility.
